The story follows Alice Manzio, a wife and mother of three who leaves a successful career in the restaurant and bar industry to take a union job at a newly built engine factory. Initially hired as a laborer, she quickly distinguishes herself through competence, discipline, and leadership.
Due to federal mandates requiring corporations to place women in supervisory roles, Alice is selected to test for a foreman position—competing against thirteen men. Her strategic thinking during the evaluation process earns her the promotion, making her one of the first female foremen in what is unmistakably described as “a man’s world.”
